Shinn Homers Twice but Kentucky Falls to Texas A&M 5-3

March 23, 2019

Kentucky kicked off their first SEC series in Kentucky Proud Park on Friday against #13 Texas A&M. UK was coming off a 16-3 win against Xavier on Tuesday, hitting four homeruns on the way to their highest run total of the season. Texas A&M came into the series 18-5 on the year with a 2-1 record in the SEC.

Kentucky looked good early but two runs in the top of the seventh put Texas A&M over the top on their way to the 5-3 win over the Wildcats. UK’s Zack Thompson started the game and struck out nine, allowing three runs off seven hits. Ryan Shinn powered the offense for the Wildcats, hitting a pair of home runs and driving in all three runs in the loss.

Game Summary

Ryan Shinn got Kentucky on the board first with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. He added a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to put UK up 3-0, bringing his season home run total to five.

Zack Thompson had allowed two hits through three innings, but two Texas A&M doubles in the top of the fourth put the Aggies on the board. A two-run homer in the top of the fifth tied the game at 3-3. Kentucky was unable to capitalize on two hits in the bottom of the inning, stranding both runners on base. Texas A&M got two in the top of the seventh on three hits to pull away from Kentucky.

Despite the loss, Shinn’s offensive performance gives him five home runs on the season. It also will go down as the first multi-home run games at Kentucky Proud Park. TJ Collett and Austin Schultz both reached base safely, extending their streaks to twelve consecutive games. Collett has a hit in the last eight games.

The Wildcats will look to get their first SEC win at 2:00 PM on Saturday.
