#19 Kentucky goes 3-0 to win 2019 Coach B Classic; Coach Lawson gets 500th win

Kentucky closed the 2019 Coach B Classic against Southern Illinois and Murray State this afternoon and came away with two victories. The Cats knocked off Southern Illinois 6-5, and Murray State 14-4 earning Coach Rachel Lawson her 500th win as an NCAA coach.

Southern Illinois

Southern Illinois got on the board first after a lead-off walk and two out single into left field. (Southern Ill. 1, Kentucky 0). Kentucky then took the lead as Abbey Cheek reached first base on a fielder’s choice with bases loaded, and Alex Martens hit by a pitch to force in a run. (Kentucky 2, Southern Ill. 1). The hits kept on coming as Mallory Peyton hit a two-run double to left center and to score a pair. (Kentucky 4, Southern Ill. 1) Kelsey Henson added on to Kentucky’s climbing lead on a SAC fly to left field close to the wall. (Kentucky 5, Southern Ill. 1) Southern Illinois was able to get a run back as they tried  to catch up to Kentucky. (Kentucky 5, Southern Ill. 2) Southern Illinois responded by scoring three runs off a RBI single and a home run. (Kentucky 5, Southern Ill. 5).  The Wildcats gotthe win on a walk off SAC fly by Jenny Schaper.

Murray State

Kentucky got on the board first in the game against in-state opponent,  Murray State as they took the lead on a two RBI single up the middle by Kelsey Henson. (Kentucky 2, Murray State 0) Murray State took advantage of a Kentucky throwing error and got  two runs of their own to tie the game. (Kentucky 2, Murray State 2).  Kayla Kowalik put Kentucky up by 3 on a RBI triple to the right center wall. (Kentucky 5, Murray State 2) Mallory Peyton added to the lead as she smacked her sixth home run to right center to start the third inning for Kentucky. (Kentucky 6, Murray State 2) Murray State scored a run on an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth. (Kentucky 6, Murray State 3). Kentucky’s Alex Martens grounded out into a run that scored  Jaci Babbs in the fifth. (Kentucky 7, Murray State 3) The Racers got their final run on a RBI single. (Kentucky 7, Murray State 4) The Wildcats sealed their win on seven runs on four hits from Abbey Cheek, a home run, Kayla Kowalik from second base, Katie Reed from first, and Mallory Peyton from second all in the top of the seventh inning.

Kentucky goes 3-0 in the weekend and wins the 2019 Coach B Classic in Chattanooga, TN.

 Kentucky travels to Columbia to take on South Carolina to start off SEC play February 8-10.
