Kentucky Blanks Cal 5-0 in Game 1 of their Saturday Double Header

February 23, 2019

Kentucky finishes up their west coast trip with games against two Californian schools.

The first game of the night pitted Kentucky against California, who came into the game

with a 7-5 record. Despite that mediocre record, the opponents they have lost to have

been far from mediocre. All five of their losses have come to top 25 teams.

Kentucky used eight hits as well as four Cal errors to score 5 runs in the 5-0 win against

the Golden Bears of Cal. The win pushes Kentucky's record on the season to 8-6 while

handing Cal their sixth top 25 loss on the year. The Cats will carry their momentum and

two-game winning streak into a matchup with #2 UCLA later tonight.

Game Summary

Sophomore Grace Baalman started on the mound for Kentucky in a matchup against

Cal's Zoe Conely. After a scoreless 1st inning, Kentucky got on the board in the top of

the 2nd with three runs. Lauren Johnson continued her hot streak at the plate knocking

in the first run of the game with an RBI single. Two more runs scored on a Sarah

Rainwater single and ensuing error, pushing UK's lead to 3-0 going into the bottom of

the 2nd.

Abbey Cheek, who came into today with a seven-game hit streak, singled in the top of

the fifth and drove in a run to extend that streak to eight. She later scored on an error to

push the Kentucky lead to five heading into the bottom of the 5th.

Baalman had a great day on the mound, holding Cal to 5 hits and 0 runs while pitching

her second complete game of the year. The win brings her to 3-3 on the year.
