#21 Kentucky drops game to #3 Oklahoma in ESPN St. Pete/Clearwater Invitational

February 14, 2019

The University of Kentucky softball team continued their season in the inaugural 2019 ESPN St. Pete/ Clearwater Invitational against the University of Oklahoma on Thursday evening.

The Cats fell to the Sooners in their first game of the invitational, 9-1.

Lauren Johnson started out the game for Kentucky with a lead off home run to give the Cats a 1-0. A perfect start for Kentucky, but Oklahoma would respond quickly. In the bottom of the third, Sydney Romero hit a three-run home run to put the Sooners up 3-1, and they would not look back.

Kentucky was able to put two runners on in the fourth thanks to erros by Oklahoma, but the Cats could not push a run across. Oklahoma would add a run in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to three before Grace Baalman recorded a big strick out of Jocelyn Alo to end the inning.

Kentucky looked to grab a little bit of life in the fifth when Kayla Kowalik drew a two-out walk, but the inning ended with a Lauren Johnson fly out. Kentucky continued to trail  4-1 half-way through the fifth inning.

Kentucky was unable to get anything across in the sixth, and Oklahoma came to plate in the bottom half and put five runs on the board to end the game, 9-1.

Kentucky returns to action on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. ET vs. Hofstra.
