Kentucky Basketball Rapid Recap - UK 94, Transy 66

October 26, 2018

Kentucky hosted Transylvania tonight in the first of 2 exhibition games before tipping off November 6 against Duke in Chicago with the Champions Classic. The Pioneers were unable to offer much of a challenge as the Cats won easily 94 to 66.

Kentucky started the game with the following lineup:

  • Nick Richards
  • Reid Travis
  • PJ Washington
  • Immanuel Quickley
  • Quade Green

There were some early nerves as Quade missed a layup, Immanuel picked up 2 quick fouls, and Nick missed a couple of free throws, but the Cats still led 8-5 at the under-16 timeout. Cal decided to go to a lineup with more ball handlers (Montgomery, Travis, Johnson, Herro, and Hagans) and Kentucky quickly put together a 12-0 run to go up 18-5.

The Cats' backcourt picked up Transy from 3/4 court much of the half and their bigs dominated the boards with a 28-12 edge. Nick Richards was the first to reach double figures tonight (10), while Keldon Johnson, EJ Montgomery, and PJ Washington each added 8. Reid Travis led UK with 7 rebounds, while Montgomery tallied 6. Kentucky was 0-6 from downtown, but led 49-30 going into the half on 62% shooting.

Kentucky began the 2nd half with EJ Montgomery, Reid Travis, Keldon Johnson, Travis Herro, and Ashton Hagans. This lineup also started the half slowly, but continued to gradually increase the margin. With 5 turnovers in the first 9 minutes, Kentucky was up to 11 for the game. The shots that were taken were good looks as the Cats built a 69-41 lead on 8/10 shooting to start the half.

Kentucky went into a slump themselves, a 3/12 stretch, which saw Transy outscore them 16-11 over a 7 minute span. It was 80-57 with just under 4 minutes remaining. The Pioneers finished strong nearly playing the Cats even (37-36) in the second half before Kentucky added the last 8 of the game to win by 28.

Cal did a nice job of spreading the minutes tonight as 9 players had 17-24 minutes. This led to a balanced scoring attack as 7 players contributed 10-14 points. There was also a group effort attacking the glass on the smaller opponent led by Travis (9 rb), Montgomery (8), and Richards (7). Kentucky did not shoot the ball well from the outside (1/13 from 3) and committed 14 turnovers. This was a closer game than most expected, but this is far from a finished product.
