Blue-White Game Recap

Lexington, KY - The Kentucky Wildcats hosted their annual Blue-White game which features the team playing each other to give fans a glimpse at the full squad. The Blue team featured a backcourt of freshman Immanuel Quickley and sophomore Quade Green with a frontcourt of freshman Keldon Johnson, sophomore PJ Washington, and sophomore Nick Richards. Coming off the bench was senior Johnny David. The White team had freshman Ashton Hagans, Tyler Herro, EJ Montgomery, redshirt freshman Jemarl Baker, senior Reid Travis, and junior Brad Calipari off the bench.

The Blue team jumped out to an early lead at the first media timeout. The scoring attack was balanced as Johnson, Washington, Richards, and Quickley all scored to give the Blue team an 11-6 lead. Montgomery had a big block and two buckets for the White team.

Richards dominated the next four minutes, finishing the 10 minutes with six points and five boards. The whole team is long and athletic with good size. It'll be interesting to see if other teams can compete on the glass with them.

As the half continued, Richards and Johnson led the Blue team, while Montgomery led the White team. With three minutes left, Richards and Johnson had 12 points apiece and Richards added seven boards. Montgomery had 11 points on 5-7 shooting.

The half ended with the White team leading 52-51. The Blue team had three players in double figures; Johnson (16), Richards (12), and Quickley (11). White had three players as well; Travis (16), Herro (13), and Montgomery (11).  Johnson was 6-9 from the field, and Travis was 8-9 with seven boards. Both teams shot a combined 6-15 from deep. Washinton was a disappointment, finishing the half with only four points and no rebounds.

The second half saw the teams get switched up a bit. Johnson and Quickley moved to the White team while Baker and Travis moved to the Blue team. Richards came out in the first four minutes and had four blocks. His improvement is noticeable from last year. He's playing more fluid and with more confidence and attitude.

The Blue team built a 13 point lead at the under 12 timeout. After a disappointing first half, Washington came out with 10 points on 4-4  shooting from the field and even knocked down a three. Montgomery and Herro continued to lead the White team with six and seven points respectively in the half.

The Blue team continued to build it's lead, going up 90-75 at the under eight timeout. Washington still had not missed a shot, going 8-8 for 19 points in the second half alone. Herro (11) and Montgomery (10) continued to pace the White team throughout the second half.

The game ended with a final score of 104-96 and the Blue team sealing the victory. On the game, Herro led all scorers with 34 points on 12-16 shooting. Washington finished with 23, 19 of which came in the second half. Travis, who changed teams at half, finished with a total of 27 points and 13 boards showing that he's willing to be the bruising big and do the dirty work. Green chipped in 17 points and nine assists while Richards had 16 points and 16 rebounds.

The biggest takeaway for me was how good Montgomery looked. He finished with 21 points, eight boards and shot 9-14. He looked smooth in transition and in the halfcourt with a comfort in taking 15-20 foot jumpers.

The length and size was apparent throughout the game. The shooting was equally encouraging and Montgomery really surprised a lot of people who have yet to really see what he has. The defense would be the only knit to pick but it is a scrimmage. This team is too athletic and long to not be good on that end of the floor, but it will certainly be something Cal works on.

I continue to say this team has everything you could possibly want. Shooting, size, length, athleticism, and depth. My message to everyone would be to buckle up because this is going to be an entertaining team to watch throughout the season. They return Friday, Oct. 26 to play their first of two exhibition games against Transylvania University in Lexington. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
