Weekend Score Update: Oct 17

This weekend gave us only five SEC games, as both the LSU-Florida game and the Vanderbilt-Missouri game were postponed due to positive Covid tests. Of course, the Wildcats brought home a huge win from Knoxville where they dominated the Volunteers to the tune of 34-7.

Texas A&M: 28

Mississippi State: 14

KJ Costello struggled again this week, prompting the Bulldogs to go to Will Rogers. The change in quarterback wasn’t much help, as Kellen Mond threw for two touchdowns and the Aggies added two more on the ground to lift Texas A&M over Mississippi State. Mike Leach’s SEC honeymoon is well over, and he has to go to Alabama after next week’s bye. Texas A&M, however, is sitting pretty at 3-1 with Arkansas coming up after their bye.

Auburn: 22

South Carolina: 30

The Gamecocks look to be the real deal this year under the arm of Collin Hill, who did just enough for the victory today with 144 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Bo Nix threw for 272 yards and a touchdown, but was intercepted three times by a greedy South Carolina defense that took advantage of their opportunities. Auburn goes to Ole Miss next week to face a team that had massive struggles of their own today, and South Carolina heads to Death Valley to play LSU in a game that’s suddenly much more interesting than it was four weeks ago.

Kentucky will host South Carolina the last week of the season, and that matchup is looking more exciting by the week. With more than half the season to go before then, it’s already looking like a great matchup between opportunistic defenses.

Ole Miss: 21

Arkansas: 33

Arkansas’ victory over Ole Miss marked their second SEC win in three weeks after not notching one since 2017. The Razorbacks rode their defense to the win, intercepting Matt Corral a staggering six times. Feleipe Franks threw one of his own, along with one touchdown, but did enough to help the Razorbacks hold onto a lead after Ole Miss started coming back in the second half. Arkansas enjoys a bye next week to prepare for a trip to College Station on Halloween where they’ll be challenged by a hot Texas A&M team. Ole Miss, only one week after taking Alabama deep into the fourth quarter, needs a get-right game next week, which might be hard to come by as they welcome the Auburn Tigers.

Georgia: 24

Alabama: 41

The first half of the game of the year up to this point lived up to the hype, as teams traded interceptions within the first minute of the game before Alabama scored in the next minute. By halftime the score was 24-20 in Georgia’s favor, but the second half was all Tide. Mac Jones threw for 417 yards and four touchdowns after his early error, while Stetson Bennett did what he could but struggled with passes being tipped at the line. He finished the day with 269 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. DeVonta Smith led the way receiving for Alabam with 167 yards and two touchdowns, but Jaylen Waddle wasn’t far behind with 161 yards and a score. Alabama, now 4-0, travels to Knoxville next week to face a flailing Tennessee squad. Georgia gets a bye next week before hosting Kentucky on Halloween.

That Georgia-Kentucky matchup was originally scheduled for next week, but changes in the schedule due to Covid means Georgia will get a bye week to recover before traveling to Lexington in a game where they’ll look to regain some confidence. Kentucky will have their hands full with Stetson Bennett and a stellar Bulldog squad.

Clemson: 73

Georgia Tech: 7

Clemson cruised to a massive victory against a Georgia Tech team that came in 2-2, once against proving their dominance in the ACC. The Tigers will remain locked in at #1 this week after the total blowout.

Louisville: 7

Notre Dame: 12

The Cardinals fell to the Fighting Irish in an ugly one today, holding the #4 ranked team to two field goals in the first half and a touchdown with a failed 2-point conversion in the second half. Notre Dame did notch the win, but it’s hard to imagine them maintaining the #4 ranking for much longer if they continue to perform like they did today.
