Yahtzee! Three-star LB Martez Thrower Commits to Kentucky

Yahtzee! Kentucky has landed three-star linebacker Martez Thrower. Thrower is a 6-1.5 outside linebacker weighing in at 215 pounds according to his high school coach. He has continued to add weight, but he will need to develop his body to make a major impact. Coming out of Rochelle, GA, Thrower had 7 SEC offers including Kentucky, Auburn, Georgia, and Mississippi State. This commitment is another win for linebackers coach Jon Sumrall, who adds a dynamic athlete capable of playing inside or out. Sumrall continues to flex his muscles in the Deep South.

Despite being listed as an outside linebacker, Thrower moves more like an inside backer on his film. He consistently shows the ability to track the play, disengage from his blocks and close in on the ball carrier. He exhibits impressive acceleration once he keys in on the running back, closing quickly and is a sure tackler. He occasionally can be somewhat out of control going in for the tackle, but his athleticism and body control gives him the ability to adjust and still make the play. If he can build up strength while maintaining his athleticism, his instincts should translate into him being a run-stopping linebacker with the speed to work sideline to sideline. He is likely to be trained at both inside spots as well as the stand-up outside backer spot at UK.

Thrower joins JUCO linebacker Joko Willis as the fourth defensive commitment for the 2021 class. SDE Kahlil Saunders and S Jordan Lovett are the other two members of the defensive class so far. Linebacker is a position of need for the Cats in this class, so they are likely not done at the position.
