Johnny Juzang has entered the Transfer Portal

March 28, 2020

For the fourth time in five years, a talented freshman will be transferring out of the Kentucky Basketball program. Johnny Juzang, the freshman from Los Angeles, CA, announced Friday that he will be entering the transfer portal. He becomes the second sharp-shooter from California to transfer, joining Jemarl Baker. After having arguably his best game in the final contest against Florida, playing 33 minutes and scoring 10 points, Juzang seemed poised for a breakout in year two.

John Calipari took to Twitter to comment on Juzang’s decision, saying that he wished nothing but the best for Juzang and would welcome him back with open arms if that is the decision he ultimately came to.

While he looked to be in a position to have a bigger role on next year’s team, Kentucky is bringing in two top-ten players on the wings in BJ Boston and Terrence Clarke. Juzang would likely have had to battle for minutes again, something that is tough to overcome even for the most competitive. Juzang would likely have needed a couple more years in the program before he had a spot locked down, and that is a long time to wait when you have the goal of making it to the next level.

It is rumored that Arizona and Gonzaga are the likely leaders for Juzang, but that only seems like speculation so far. The former top-35 player will almost certainly be returning to the West Coast to be closer to his family. While it is never good to lose a solid rotation player who has shown the ability to knock down shots, this is likely the best move for Juzang and his family.

So what does this mean for Kentucky? As I mentioned earlier, Kentucky brings in two top-ten wings next year in Clarke and Boston, as well as combo guard Devin Askew and top-50 wing Cam’Ron Fletcher. Those four will join redshirt freshman Dontaie Allen as the bulk of Kentucky’s backcourt. Kentucky has also been rumored to be a potential landing spot for a transfer (regular or graduate), but no real names have surfaced as legitimate options. That is likely because the BBN still awaits the decisions of Immanuel Quickley and Ashton Hagans as well, who could return. While Kentucky would have loved to retain Johnny Juzang, they do not lack options in filling his spot.
