Coach (Eddie) Gran is making sure South Florida recruits know Kentucky has interest in them. Shortly after Kentucky landed St. Thomas Aquinas three-star junior offensive tackle Jake Pope, several of his STA teammates received offers from Kentucky. One, in particular, was outside linebacker, Derek Wingo, who is ranked as a four-star by Rivals. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound sophomore holds offers from Georgia, Texas, Clemson, Louisville, Oregon, Mississippi, Ohio State and several more.

Wingo discussed his latest SEC offer from Kentucky.

“It’s an offer I’ve been hoping to get to be honest. I wasn’t surprised by really wanted an offer from Kentucky,” said Wingo. “I like the idea of them looking at me as an outside linebacker, safety or defensive end.”

He explains why he was hoping for a Kentucky offer.

“Kentucky is a beautiful place and now two of my closest friends are committed there (Nik Scalzo and Jake Pope). A lot of Broward athletes end up in Kentucky somewhere.”

Wingo mentioned some of his teammates like Kentucky.

“I’m in the 2020 class and I know Kentucky in the top schools for Braylen Ingram, Jason Munoz, Devon Betty, and Joey Kirner all like Kentucky. I could definitely see some more guys from St. Thomas Aquinas go to Kentucky.”

Jason Munoz did say he would love to visit Kentucky again this summer and is in the process of talking to his parents to set up a return visit to Lexington.

The St. Thomas Aquinas sophomore standout said he has a couple of visits planned this summer.

“I’m visiting Florida this weekend, Ohio State on June 21st, and Oklahoma on June 25th,” said Wingo. “I am also planning a visit to Kentucky just don’t have a set date in place but it will be this summer for sure.”

Wingo mentioned he has some early favorites in his recruitment.

“Ohio State, Clemson, and Oklahoma are three schools standing out in my recruitment right now.”

While Kentucky is not listed in Wingo early favorites could that change this summer?

“I could see Kentucky entering into my favorites after my visit there.”

He also has a timeframe when he wants to make his college decision.

“I would like to make my decision this summer if possible or after my junior season.”

Kentucky has some stiff competition, but having Nik Scalzo and Jake Pope already committed to Kentucky helps some with Wingo and other St. Thomas Aquinas recruits.
